What also makes the development slow is that many developers have no
interest in developing drivers for Winmodems, as they - rightly, IMO -
regard them as crippled[0] and hence do not want to support them -
especially not, if supporting them involves the tedious procedure of
reengineering the drivers. In a way I find this understandable - with
real modems, you don't have that "moving target" problem, as they're
just another serial port device.
Hence, the only way of getting drivers en masse I can see is that the
manufacturers actively pursue this. On the other hand, Winmodems were
invented to cut costs, so I wouldn't hold my breath with regard to the
willingness to spend the extra development costs...
