I only have a home DSL line (I get 1.1 mbps out of a possible 1.5 down) so
the RT311's 10 mbps DSL port is more than adequate for my needs (the LAN
port is 100 mbps.) I understand the RT311 is more configurable than the
Linksys in terms of opening up ports and scripting rules.
However, the biggest improvement over my Linux 486 firewall was speed. The
Linux box took a 20% hunk off the top in terms of thru-put. I dropped from
1.1 mbps to around 850-900 kbps behind the firewall. The RT311 appears to
shave 5% or less off the speed. That said, I never did try a Pentium class
machine with PCI cards and some extra memory as a firewall to see how that
might compare to the 486.
