  I too am struggling with IPCHAINS.  I have found a few sites some with
sample scripts to use as templates or whatever:

  Yes the documentation is sparse and confusing.  As a neophyte in Linux
and this level of OS interaction in general I suspect that the authors
are expecting the readers to have a certain level of sophistication that
I certainly don't have.  All we can do is learn to understand and when
we figure it out at our level submit information to the authors for
compilation into the existing documents or place the information so that
it is available to others.
