I  too found these sites useful.
The Burgiss script was easiest for me, mainly because it was a working
example.  I was able to take his script and just change a few
IP addresses and it seemed to work for me.

The trouble with some of the  more general scripts
is that they have a long list of commented out commands
and leave it up to the new user to pick what is needed.
Well this newcomer to ipchains couldn't do it that way.
I needed a working example.

I dont yet fully understand the syntax of
or the logic behind  every command line in the burgiss script,
but it evidently works,
and with more experience I will get the full understanding.

The important thing is to get going with
something that has some degree of nontrivial functionality.
Then with greater understanding changes can be attempted.
