Okay...I was able to get PCM output (ie. mpg123) as well as CD output,
which is half the battle.  Can't seem to play Sound Blaster compatible
sounds, however.  Quake2 says that 16-bit sound is not supported, and to
specify 8-bit.  However when I try this, I get nothing but random
crackling noises when in Quake.

I did locate the document and tried both the Framebuffer X server as well
as the patched SVGA server.  Neither seems to work.  When I try to use the
FB server, nothing happens.  When I try to set a mode with fbset, I get
"/dev/fb0 - no such device" (there are lots of /dev/fb* files, however).  
I do have FB support compiled into the kernel (it's a Red Hat stock
kernel).

As far as the patched SVGA server goes, I don't get any error messages,
but all that happens is that my console goes black as it switches to
vty7.  However, if I alt-f1 back to vty1, I see that the server had just
aborted with no explanation:
