i'm not sure how much i can help, but i figure anything's worth a try.
this was recently happening to a friend of mine, and it turned out to
be a problem with his powersave stuff on his laptop. it was dropping his
cpu clockspeed as low as 8mhz at one point. i think he upgraded his kernel,
and it seemed to solve it, but i can't be sure. this might be someplace to
look into anyway. hope this helps.
