I got it to work about two weeks ago after horsing with it for some time.
Here is what I had to (don't ask me why ... this made it work!!).

1) Build and install from the source RPMs.

2) Install again from the binary RPMs.

Perform (1) and (2) both for Cyrus-SASL (do this one first) and then
Cyrus-IMAP.

Make sure /usr/lib/sasl contains all the SASL libraries. Make sure
/usr/lib/sasl/Cyrus.conf exists and is properly configured. Make sure
/etc/imap.conf exists and is properly configured.

My /usr/lib/sasl/Cyrus.conf is setup to use PAM. Then /etc/pam.d/imap
contains entries to use pam (I am using pam_nds since I am having my users
authenticate against Novell's NDS using nds4linux via pam). If you do not
want to use third party pam authentication (pam_nds in my case) and you want
to use shadow passwords, make sure the user cyrus has read rights to
/etc/shadow.

Hope this helps,
--Moby
