You can go into ~/.xscreensaver and put a - (dash) in front of everything
you don't want running. Or you can type 'xsceensaver-demo --prefs' and
disable all of the ones you don't want.
You could even have several different .xscreensaver files with different
options that could be changed and used at will, either via a script or
manually or even some type of random file copier.
As for the question you asked, I have no idea. I don't use gnome even
though it's installed for the benefit of some other things I do use.
