Hmm. That's a good one.
I would test whether or not its a hardware problem and not necessarily an OS
problem.
I have multiboot machines and often times I would boot to Win98 to see what
resources are allocated to the device. And I compare the results to what I
get under Linux. Also, I would check to see if the device even works under
Win98. If not, enough said. If you don't have a multiboot system, clearly
this is not an option.
One time, I came across a corrupted hwconf file that actually brought to our
system. A fix for it was to delete the hwconf file and reboot linux. Linux
then rebuilt the hwconf file and all works like a charm.
What I propose is that you 1) delete you hwconf file (make a backup copy
first); 2) cycle down your system; 3) put your card in a different pci slot;
4) power up Linux 5) check the new hwconf (which should have been rebuilt
during the boot process); 6) compare the new hwconf file to your old one.
Expect to possibly have a different IRQ for your Eth card.
If nothing else, try the card in a different machine.
Other things to try:
check for core files that are dated for first time that the card failed to
work.
Check your messages file for errors
check the dmesg file
rebuild you kernel with a "fresh" driver for the card.
I'm sorry this is not very concrete but it could point you in the right
direction.
