Thanks to all thise who offered advice. The final working solution was
to use:

/sbin/insmod parport
/sbin/insmod parport_pc
/sbin/insmod ppa

and variations on:

mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip

or associated entries in /etc/fstab to allow user access.
