Running Redhat 6.0 on a firewall with IPCHAINS/MASQ to share a DSL
connection. Has worked perfect for months on end until recently.

For the past several weeks I've had problems with the DSL connection
regularly freezing even though the DSL modem shows a connection and
there have no problems showing up in the Linux log files.

I've spent considerable time with SWBell's DSL tech people (who
naturally don't directly support Linux, though they are trying to be
helpful.)

At first, I thought my firewall machine had gone south, but a
replacement machine that is newer and faster suffers the same problem.
Replacing NIC's in both machines did not help.

The most likely theory at this point is that SWBell is failing to
renew my DHCP lease when my machine requests it. They are supposed to
call me back but I haven't heard anything yet.

Question 1: my understanding is that DHCP addresses generally have a 3
day lease. However, my machine is asking to renew the lease every 2 or
3 hours, which causes a freeze. Is there a way to slow the frequency
that my machine asks for a lease renewal?

Question 2: is anyone aware of any changes at SWBell in the past two
months that would cause this problem? My machine connects perfectly
everytime from a cold boot. My modem lights indicate it is not the
problem. It appears to be a lease renewal issue. Is this a bad DHCP
server at their end or something in a script I need to edit at my end?

Comments appreciated!
