Hello Alan,
I personally use an HP870Cse. I have used this printer under the following
with excellent success. It is not on the cheep list, but most of the HP
Printers are plenty Linux Friendly. I have set up several others both as
network shares and personal devices. All have worked well regardless of
model.
Here you can find HP's official statement of compatability with Linux.
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpd06898.html
You are right about the 720C, the other models that wont work are listed.
All other should work.
The only pitfalls I have encountered with HP printers is the following...
1) Can't automatically retrieve drivers from the server, have to manually
load on each machine. I never looked into a fix for this, so you may find
that someone has a fix for this situation.
2) The faux double sided printing capable with some of the printer drivers
is unavailable. But again I could be wrong about this as well, since it was
never very important, but then again I wouldn't mind knowing that it could
be done, since it is a handy feature.
Other then that, ALL of my experiences have been pleasant ones. I will also
say that it works quite well and very efficiently. I actually seem to have
less problems then when I have used NT in the same situation.(And HP has NT
Drivers.)
Hope this helps.
Have fun,
--
