I've been researching the purchase of a cheap color inkjet printer for
work. I want it to hang off a Linux box to provide backup printing for my
servers. And it also needs to be accessible as a Windows share for
win95/98 users.
There is a lot of information about what works with Linux and how well....
although a lot is regarding models I cannot now buy new. But,
understandably, these resources do not discuss anything about suitability
for an integrated environment (as a Samba/Linux-hosted Windows share).
For example, my wife bought an HP 720C and it not only requires intense
Windows-specific drivers but this driver will only work for a local
printer. If the printer is not attached to the computer, the drivers
refuse to speak to it. Since I cannot experiment with that printer, I
don't know if there are any other implications (for the winblows clients)
of hanging the printer off a Linux machine.
Any help greatly appreciated.
