i made the new partition, logged in as root, the 'cd /', made a new
directory called var-new, mounted the partiton to that directory, then
I used this command 'cp -aRv var/* var-new'  unmounted the var-new
directory,  rm -rf var/*  mounted the new var directory under /var and
then add a line to my fstab to make sur it was mounted at boot time.
