When I do restores from zips I use
cpio -icdm < /dev/hd4
I doubt if it will help but since the syntax was
different
I thought I might as well pass it on. Good Luck I know
it is a bummer when you can't get backups working.
Do you have an older version of the tape you could
restore from and then try for the files you need to a
tmp directory. I had a slightly corruptted cpio that I
salvaged some files from that way.
