With ntpd, it is not necessary to set the time first.  If the current time is
slow, like mine was, it will speed up the clock until it catches up and if
the time is fast, it will slow it down.  Within about 15 minutes the correct
time was set on my machine.

And it is right on time.  How do I know that the time is correct?  Because I
have C-Band TVRO dishes, I can look at a couple of the network feeds.  When
Fox isn't sending anything out, their locked clock is displayed on the screen.
Same goes for CBS and ABC (when those two aren't scrambled :-).
