this is what I have discovered:
It has been posted, most vocally by Tom, that I should have read the
6.1 installation manual before even attempting to do the installations.
Well, I've printed it and looked over the beginning and have made some
very surprising discoveries. So, bring out your copy of the manual
and read along with me.
1) Page 19, section 2.4
Only the custom-class install allows you to complete flexibility. The
workstation- abd server-class installations go through the installation
process for you and omit certain steps. However, you now can choose
to partition your dives manually in a workstation- or server-class
installation.
2) Page 19, section 2.4.1
If you chose <not> to partition manually, a workstation-class installation
removes any Linux-related partitions on all installed hard drives (and
uses all free unpartitioned disk space) to create the following partitions:
3) Page 20, section 2.4.2
If you choose <not> to partition manually, a server-class installation
removes <ALL existing partitions> on <ALL installed hard drives>, so choose
this installation class if you're sure you have nothing you want saved!
The key in all of the above paragraphs is that it says that you will be
offered the option to partition manually and if you choose not to, will it
remove the data from the drive(s).
Under the server install, I do not remember checking any kind of box that
would allow me to manually partition the drive(s) before it continued on
destroying the partition tables on my drives. According to the above, it
was supposed to.
I do not remember seeing the screens as shown on pages 43-45, section 4.7.
I have a spare hard drive that I am going to connect to the system and do
another install and see what happens. The only way I am going to know for
sure, is to try again.
I will report back (even if I was totally wrong).
