Hi!
I can't install Redhat 6.1 in my Dell PC with a 20.4G Ultra ATA hard drive with a ATA 66 controller which is not currently supported. However, it is said that it will work if I use the 33Mhz controllers on the card, instead of the 66Mhz. But Redhat is not able to help me with this. Can somebody provide some detail about this issue? Is the 33Mhz and 66Mhz controllers coexist in the same card? Is there any risk doing this? Thanks.
Find a small IDE drive somewhere and connect it to the logic board IDE controller. Install RedHat onto that drive. Once there, upgrade the kernel to 2.2.14 and patch it with Andre's IDE patches <ftp://ftp.de.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/ide.2.2.14.20000124.patch.bz2> -- this will allow you to access the drive on the ULTRA-66 controller (make sure to turn the 66 option on as you configure the new kernel).
Now, you'll be able to use and install onto the ULTRA-66 connected drive. However, I have not succeeded in booting off of it, although some others reported success. I boot off of a floppy.
Technically, you should be able to move the drive to the logic board controller, upgrade the kernel, and them move the drive to the ULTRA-66 card. You'll have to update parameters on your floppy kernel as you do this.
Cheers, igor
