I recommend that you do the following:
1) Install openssh, and run sshd on your Linux box.  Set up sshd to
forward X. (Look in /etc/ssh/sshd_config for the X11Forwarding option)
2) Install terra term, and ttssh on your windows box.  Set up ttssh to
forward X connections to the local X server.  Also configure it to use
compression on connections.

You should now be able to ssh into your machine at home, and run any X
application over a secure, encrypted, and compressed link.

Just:
startkde
or
gnome-session

Wait a few seconds (or a lot of seconds, depending on the speed of the
connection) and you'll have your desktop.

You won't change anything major by following the above instructions.  It
shouln't affect your ability to use X at the terminal.
