I have set up dhcpd on a linux box to resolve (I hope) the ipaddress conflict issues we have been haveing as we move a few machines around the office. I have a few questions form those of you who have some experience in administering networks with both windows and linuxmachines on them. #1. When setting up a windows box I have deleted all gateway, nameserver, and IP address information. Seems to work but the name resolution from a linux box does not work because the ip address has changed. Don't know why I would need it yet but trying to get a feel for how all this fits together. Is this correct? btw it is the windows boxes I have been having trouble with so far. #2. Is there any benefit to placing the linuxboxes that are static ip addressed for services like name serving, mailserver database etc into the dhcpd.conf file? Seems that if a network card gets replaced I will have to remember to change the hwaddress inorder for it to get the correct ip address. Has not happened but I can just see me in a tizzy when the damn thing is down and swapping parts and trying to figure out why it won't work. If I don't put it into dhcpd.conf then it should come up with the new card ok, right? #3. We are testing several different configurations of linux and are going to be getting some new boxes in soon. Should I assign it/them a host name and domain name and let dhcp give it all the other stuff? #3a If I dynamically assign them ip addresses, is there an easy way to find out what the address is from a different box? I can look into /var/state/dhcp/dhcpd.leases for the last entry for a name and get the ip address that way so I don't have to phyically get off my ass and go to the machine and run ifconfig just to find out what ip address was assigned but that seems like a lot of wrok for something so simple. #3b Can my DNS (same box as the dhcpd server BTW) read the *.leases file or somehow communicate with dhcpd to have the name resolution work out? #3c Is this where wins comes in? #4. am I on the right track or am I missing the big picture, or big piece of it anyway, somewhere? Any comments, especially helpful ones, are greatly appreciated :) Bret
