Does gdm do this in xterms as well at the virtual consoles?  Could it be
that it is not running?

Also I have seen boxes that were configured to have the middle button
emulated by clicking both buttons at the same time.  You might try that.

BTW I use putty to ssh in Win98 (what a piece of crap) into the boxes
here on our lan and using a combination of the standard windows cut and
paste and the mouse click stuff in the putty terms can cut from a
windows prog and paste into a console screen and vica-versa.

Now for all you other guys out there who are going to say DUH!  I
thought I would try to contribute to general knowledge base of these
guys a little.  I have been using Linux for over three years off and on
but still learn "simple" stuff that you guys probably take for granted
every day.  I have picked up more tips from little tidbits like the
original post of this thread than I care to imagine.
