It's been a long time since I figured this out, but try the following:
If you are running xdm, add another line into the /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers file
that looks like the first line. If you start with initlevel 3, then try
poking around the /etc/X11 directory, and see if you can find another server
config file.
Sorry for the incomplete data, it was a 5.2 box that has been retired for
awhile.
