First of all, Western Siberia sounds a bloody hell of alot colder then
the Scottish Highlands, where my people are from. I hope you are keeping
warm! Second, I finally got RedHat 6.1 installed on this old Compaq
1500. The big problem with the Compaq 1500 is that it uses the original
Smart array controller, which is an EISA card, not a PCI card. The stock
RedHat can't deal with that card and a few of the other really quirky
things about this machine. You have to get some kernel patches and
follow a rather strict setup procedure to make it work. Robert D.

Since I did not see a reply to your query, I thought I would offer a
miniscule bit of assistance. I was given a Proliant 800 server (guy
thought something was wrong with the machine, fan went out 2 weeks
later,
no problems otherwise, warranty repair, good to go...sweet!) and, being
completely unfamiliar with Compaq and their lovely system configuration
partition, I needed tech support. Talked with a fellow named Richard
Black (super nice fellow) who led me to his page on Compaq servers and
Linux. There is lots of good info here, maybe some of it will be
useful.
His e-mail address is also here, and I am sure he would not mind a
couple
of questions. The URL is
