Heh.  For all intents and purposes, Linux is Unix; and one of my
favorite quotes about Unix over the decades has been:

        "Unix doesn't just not prevent you from shooting yourself in
         the foot.  It ask you what caliber weapon you need to do so."

FWIW, My (absolutely non-judgemental) take on this is: NEVER do any
sort of system upgrade or update unless you've got reliable off-line
backup.  No matter how much you trust the system, installation of any
sort can eat data.
