I believe there are compilation options used that take advantage of the 586 and 686
(pentium and pentium II ) capabilities. I believe the same source is used it is
just a matter of which options are used at compile time. It has been while since I
had to compile a kernel but seems like one of the config questions have to do with
what processor.
In short the 386 version wil run on a 686 but not at optimum speed. Not sure what
"unexpected results" might occur if a 686 kernel was run on a 3-4-586. Probably
anything from no worky at all (unlikely in my estimation) to various intermittant
problems.
RedHat has always suggested to run 386 kernels on the AMD CPUs but again I am not
sure why. I have run them and found no problems but not any kind of great strain
on the machines either.
I hate to give out incomplete information but sometimes we can get the experts
primed by getting it started :)
Didn't someone post a message saying that some version or other of the kernel now
supported the AMD CPUs better? Now you have got me wondering so I guess I will
have to go a-browsin'.
Anyone have any tips on where to start other than kernel.org? Thats where I am
heading but an awful lot of the stuff out there is over my head so any other links
with some translations for ingnoramouses, like me, that would like to learn more
are appreciated.
