Hogwash...

The Redhat 6.1 disk includes a well-patched 2.2.12 kernel in i386, i586,
and i686 flavors -- uniprocessor AND multiprocessor. The approporiate
kernel is installed for you automatically during the install.

Do you want to verify this yourself?
The following simple test should prove sufficient:

1) Inspect the size of your Redhat-installed compressed kernel.

Example:

'ls -l /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20'
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 622784 Sep 27 07:45 /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20

2) Compare this to the size of the kernels installed by the
386, 586 and 686 uniprocessor kernels on the install disk:

        652725 bytes for i386
        622966 bytes for i586
        622784 bytes for i686

Note: I got those numbers by applying the power of RPM to the
(uninstalled) packages on the Redhat CDROM. For example:

'rpm -qlp --dump kernel-2.2.12-20.i386.rpm | grep vmlinuz-2.2.12-20'

RPM rules. 'Nuff said. :)
I hope that clears this issue up once and for all.
