Believe it or not we found tech support at Compaq to be pretty helpful. We bought a couple of compaq 3000s at a bankruptcy auction and between the smartstart software, a redhat 6.0 cd and a web page that the tech support guy sent us to we were up and running on both machines in a few hours. I'll ask my partner in the morning if he still has the link, but you might give compaq a call. I could not believe how knowledgeable the tech I spoke to was. Maybe luck, I don't know we have had no problems to have to get back to them.
