I'm using a Philips ESP80X (1280x960) Digital camera. It uses
the SmartMedia memory cards. I use to download over the serial cable
using ghoto. That works great, but even at 115,200 it takes a while
(about a half an hour for a full 8Meg card). Now I have a pcmcia adapter
card for the SmartMedia and it takes about 10 seconds. I still use gphoto
for arranging and organizing as well as generating galleries.
You can get pcmcia adapters for SmartMedia, CompactFlash, and
the Memory Stick media. I would go that route. Some people have been
trying the USB cameras, but USB is still pretty bleeding edge yet.
Avoid the floppy adapters for the media cards. Most of them require
special floppy drivers and, AFAIK, are not supported. Serial works
but I would avoid parallel port adapters.
Check out gphoto <www.gphoto.org> for more information. It
supports a lot of different cameras and is capable of remote controlling
the camera if you want to do that as well.
