The 2.3 kernels have support for USB, the SuSE people have also done a
backport of the 2.3 USB code to the 2.2 kernels.

There is someone (whose name escapes me right now) on this list who has
published 2.2.14 kernels with these patches.
I'm running a 2.2.14 kernel with these patches applied:
dvd+ide (from www.kernel.dk)
reiserfs
usb-backport
udf filesystem (from www.kernel.dk)
The UDF patch needed to (in a few places) be applied manually, presumably
due to the mods that the reiserfs patches made. It wasn't anything
terrible though, and I'm no kernel hacker. The other 3 patches went in
smooth as silk.
The total diff from a stock 2.2.14 kernel (for the patches I did) is 3.3 MB.
Currently running with a USB Intellimouse Exploder^H^H^Hrer. It works
very nicely, and my accuracty with the railgun in Q3 has improved because
of the USB mouse.
