The first is matter of opinion. On the latter this may be true of the
stable branch of Debian (potato?), but one reason for this is they
have some fairly old packages. So there is a trade off there of
older-stable vs newer-more features.

RH6.1 from RH is 29.95US. You can always download for free. I think
cost should not be a factor IMO (unless you are really, really
strapped). A helluva lot of stuff there for 29.95.
