This is the sort of question that generates a lot of traffic (or none) but
probably isn't answerable. Red Hat's package management system (RPM) was
an innovation that I think a lot of people (especially on this list)
appreciate. But Debian has it's own package management system and many
non-RH distos use RPM now. Although I've not used Debian, someone recently
posted that their stable release uses an older libc which could make it
hard to install software.
I think you'll find that Linux is pretty much Linux. The distros tend to
be different in things like installation, where they put certain files,
which package management system they use, how many packages they include,
how "set-up" the system is after installation, and their philosophy (did
they just do a $gazillion IPO or are the an open group). That said, I
think you could do worse than Red Hat.
Also, there are comparison articles on-line. I would search
www.linxtoday.com or another Linux-oriented site for links.
