What would REALLY be nice is to be able to be able
to change color depth on the fly as well - not
just resolution. I have some apps that will not
run at greater than 16-bit color...but I like to
run at 32-bit (and some apps wont run properly at
lower color depths).
Is there work in progress to allow for changes in
color depth without having to restart x with -bpp
command switches? Or is there a technique for
doing this without killing x and restarting from
a command prompt?

You can change the default resolution (and all resolutions) using the
Xconfigurator utility. Also you can use the CTRL-+, or CTRL-- to make
bigger or smaller (seems to me that it had to be the keypad + and -,
not the ones across the top of the number)...
maybe I am just nuts..
