You can change the default resolution (and all resolutions) using the
Xconfigurator utility. Also you can use the CTRL-+, or CTRL-- to make
bigger or smaller (seems to me that it had to be the keypad + and -,
not the ones across the top of the number)...

maybe I am just nuts..
