Not a SAMBA or VMWare guru but I have a suggestion so you don't have to run
IMAP.
If you own the Linux POP server, telnet into it from any of your OSes and
read your mail on the server.
I have to run Outlook here at work and it cracks me up that I have saved one
puny message and my personal.pst on this machine is 1.28 MB. What's up with
that?
