I recently connected my Redhat 5.2 machine to the internet. As I need to
dial into other sites I required a fixed IP address. I added the ISP details
and using PPP, I was able to connect to the internet fine. However since
then, my machine was accidentally turned off and I now have difficulties
connecting to other machines on the LAN and indeed I am unable to ping
localhost - Network Unreachable. Other machines can ping/ftp my machine.

I can still use PPP to connect to the internet and when this is running I
CAN connect to other machines on the LAN. With PPP, I can ping localhost
[127.0.0.1], but I am unable to ping ifosuk [my machine's name on the LAN].

We do not use DNS on our LAN - 'hosts' files only.

I've been advised to check the hosts and resolv.conf files - these appear
fine.

Can anyone else offer any tip?

TIA
