Excellent... chugged away and fixed everything... well after changing
the chmod to "chmod $mode, $targfile" - the only problem was that the
script was trying to change the target of symbolic links (which it
couldn't find as the backup exists on a different machine) rather
than the symbolic links themselves.

so I was getting loads of these:

Stat failed: etc//X11/X: No such file or directory
Stat failed: etc//X11/prefdm: No such file or directory
Stat failed: etc//rc.d/init.d/linuxconf: No such file or directory
Stat failed: etc//rc.d/rc0.d/K00linuxconf: No such file or directory

types of errors. I guess that this could have been avoided by adding
a line so that the script ignored symbolic links in it's efforts...

anyway - thanks loads for the script... I think everything is happy
now... I'll have to have a read through it later when I have a bit
more time and try to work out just how trick it is! :)

thanks again... the redhat list rocks! :)
