Has anybody done the following things successfully:
1) Installed the free version of oracle 8i.
2) Created a proper oracle environment.
3) Created a test database.
4) Got the database to start.
5) Actually performed database transactions using the test database.
This is oracle 8i mind you. The commercial version 8.0.5.0.0 + patches
will work ok, but the crackmonkeys that put 8i together did not
clearly document how to get 8i to do all of the above. The installer that
shipped has some problems to say the least, and the documentation has much
to be desired. :-\
I think that I've successfully done 1 and 2, and I'm working on 3, 4, and
5.
I'm trying to put together a howto document on getting the free 8i version
not only to install, but to get it to work. If anyone has been able to get
further than me, please send me private mail. Again, this is 8i, not
8.0.5.00 + patches.
As soon as I make sure my notes are coherent and reasonable to follow, I'm
going to post them to my personal webspace.
