Hmmm...but it was ok *before* you compiled your own kernel?  That is
strange.  You may want to consider building all the SCSI support you need
into the kernel rather than making them modular.  I have a server that's
completely SCSI and I decided to go that route.  (Keep in mind I'm still on
5.2 running the 2.0.36 kernel.)  I know there's been quite a bit of work
done on the Adaptec drivers now that they're "on the bandwagon", but I was
under the impression the drivers were pretty stable in the 2.2.x kernel.
