Well, if you can't fix the problem at hand - I say create a *bigger* one! ;-)

Sounds like you've left something out of the kernel compile. Did you
change any of the SCSI settings or leave them as is? You say the devices
are not recognized at boot time - can you manually load the drivers later
and get them to work?
