I am trying to figure out what might be happening with my tapes and tape
drive. The symptoms are such that I can not tell if it is the tapes or the
drive itself.
Every week I tar up several directories to tape, an HP SureStore Tape
2000. Routinely, I restore a file or two to make sure the backups worked.
I also on occasion do a tar tvfp /dev/rst0 to read the contents of the
tape.
Last week I did the tar tvfp to list the contents of one tape and then
after a while decided to do a control-c (something I also do routinely)
and stop that process. Instead of stopping, the tape drive started making
these low pitched whirring sounds and then the amber light went on
flashing as well as the green light. The drive was only able to list part
of the contents before producing error.
I tried another tape and the same thing happened. The error given was:
st0:Error with sense data: Current error st09:00: sense key Medium Error
Additional sense indicates Unrecovered read error
I then put in a fresh unused tape and was able to backup, restore and list
with no problem. Since then, having shut off and on the computer and
drive, I have been able to do two backups, restore a file and list
contents without incident.
I took the two tapes in question and loaded them onto another HP SureStore
Tape 5000. Running the tar tvfp /dev/rst0 command, both tapes were able to
red the contents. However, one of the two tapes did prompt the SureStore
unit to start flashing the amber light as well as the green light.
Has anyone encountered a similar situation or seen that error mentioned
above and be able to help me sort out what the problem might be? Both the
tapes in question have been used 3-4 times each. The unit in question is 3
and a half years old.
Any help appreciated.
