Maybe you need to turn off compression or error correction. For
I couldn't get a my zoom modem and usr modem to connect  properly
so I tried turning off compression and error correction and then
it worked. I also have to do this when I talk to a very old hayes
modem. However when the usr modem calls the zoom modem
I can leave it on go figure.
