Hello!

I am planning on upgrading my 5.2 system to 6.1 tomorrow (and when I'm
finished it *will* be Thanksgiving!). However, in poking around the CD-ROM, I
found that almost 150 packages, when queried or installed, would result in:

        read failed: Input/output error (5)

to stderr and

Nov 24 10:00:27 tutus kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
        Nov 24 10:00:27 tutus kernel: 0b:00: rw=0, want=632770, limit=569906

to /var/log/messages (I have a SCSI CD-ROM drive that's never given any other
problems).

Because XFree86 is in that failing group, I'm concerned that an upgrade won't
go all that smoothly.

The upgrade on my other system went just fine (a different hardware setup, but
still RHL 5.2).

When I mount this CD-ROM on my system (the one with the errors),
/var/log/messages reports:

Nov 24 10:06:40 tutus automount[277]: attempting to mount entry /mnt/cdrom
Nov 24 10:06:45 tutus kernel: ISO9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3

Upon checking my configuration for the 5.2 kernel, there is no option for
putting the Joliet extensions into the kernel. Could that be the source of
the errors?

Thanks!

-Michael

No, my friend, the way to have good and safe government, is not to trust it
all to one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to every one exactly
the functions he is competent to. It is by dividing and subdividing these
republics from the national one down through all its subordinations, until it
ends in the administration of every man's farm by himself; by placing under
every one what his own eye may superintend, that all will be done for the
best.
