Sound in KDE

Running 6.1 with KDE 1.1.2  Sound works fine in Gnome.  KDE sound files are 
properly installed in /usr/share/sounds  When I double click on the KDE 
sound files in the file manager, they play just fine.  BUT, they will NOT 
play in the KDE Control Center or with any associated KDE event.  This has 
me stumped.  Anyone?  Thanks.
