I'm sure that someone else will answer this more fully, but you might want
to partition out /home and possibly /var too.  
I don't know about RH6.1, but 5.2 comes ready with the required services
(ok, so you have to fiddle a little bit conf files).  

Mind you, not sure about the 486.  Mine can berely cope with this list's
mail coming in...  ;)
