I am about to setup a old 486DX4100 / 16 megs of FPM RAM.....3 GB EIDE
WD hard drive , CD ROM ...Single Channel GSI 18 controller....two Kingstone
KNE20 = NE2000 Compatible ISA NICS.....to run RH 6.1 as a Gateway for my
cable modem with a FTP site, email hosting and web server. I am kind of
new to Linux and could use some advice.

I am going to partition the drive like this....

Root = 900 megs
Swap = 50 megs
Home = 2 GB or whatever is left
Swap = 50 megs

I am spliting up and using two swap files because I only have 16 megs of
RAM on the box. ..which should be enough from the command line once things
are set up and running. I have read that splitting up the swap files
improves performance on PCs with small amounts of RAM.

Once I get things running I will use partition magic to transfer what I am
not using in root over to home...Home is where the FTP site will operate
from...Correct ??
This is where I will want my available storage. My web site will be under
50 megs.

RH 6.1 has all the necessary programs to do this ..right ? I understand
that the FTP , email hosting, and firewall all install by default with RH
6.1...is this right ?.... but does Apache web server install with RH 6.1 or
do I need to obtain it separately?

I know that what I am about to do is a very common use of Linux and old 486
PCs and I am wondering if anyone has put together a step by step FAQ for
doing all this ?

Any comments, words of wisdom , warnings or advice would be appreciated.

thanks

morse
