Did you then cd to someplace off the cdrom?   If not, you would need to
do so, because you had cd'd to the cdrom according to your command.  Is
it possible you somehow created a link back to the cdrom.  The
suggestion by Steve to use fuser to identify what the kernel thought was
still using the cdrom is the way to go.

as root,   fuser /mnt/cdrom

you may have to use the full path such as /usr/sbin/fuser /mnt/cdrom
