Several people have suggested disabling auto-dialing because of this,
but that would interfere with other applications.

This is due to,I believe, identd trying to authenticate the user or a
reverse lookup being performed by the linux box. I run a DNS server for
this reason. I include part of the ip subnet in PTR resource records to
account for this issue.

IMO, one private IP address space is as good as another. To get the
skinny, read the RFC for this. Sorry, for the life of I can never
remember it's number. Use your trusty search engine for this task.
