check your /etc/resolv.conf file - your DNS is properly not set correctly
so no external names are being resolved.

(check 1st that you can ping the outside by IP number. if yes,then it
is a DNS issue, usually solved in /etc/resolv.conf, if no, then you
have a routing problem.)

probably not, modem init string aside. Infact in your ppp options file
you can set the connect speed to 115200, then no matter which modem you're
using, you'll be all set.
