In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts there should be a script called
ifcfg-ppp[X] where X is the number of the PPP device (mine is
ifcfg-ppp0). It contains the script which chat (man chat) uses to talk
automatically with the ISP.
Essentially they do the same thing, it's just that one is automatic and
one is not. It looks like there's something wrong with your script so
you'd have to tell us what it is first....
