Bill,
start up another xterm as your user ('wsimpson') and type `xhost
+localhost`.  This will allow root to display on wsimpson's display.
Then in your 'su` xterm type `export DISPLAY=":0"` (if you use bash) or
`setenv DISPLAY=":0"` (if you use a csh variant).
then you will be able to run printtool from X.  Have a great weekend!
